Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of entry passages providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their bravery," he added. "Including them were numerous British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, following an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN reports Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
