Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying these drugs must be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
The team note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Experts believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
People who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
