Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a significant prize-giving event approaches, one notices a clamor for introducing of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
