"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the band?" a message arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can become their extra sister."

However, there remains a single issue: I also longs to be the Haims' newest recruit. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Multiple celebrated fans have openly petitioned for the role.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path performing shows at neighborhood delis with their family. Now they're repeated Grammy Award hopefuls.

In the tradition of the greatest groups, they're a tight-knit unit. Their visuals repeatedly depict them walking in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such pure happiness you inevitably think, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a drum kit'," says Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That's the greatest honour. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage people to start a band."

"So all gets an invitation to be the honorary part of the family."

Grammy Milestone

The band are connecting from a break, where they're resting up after an major tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the honor resonates with the trio.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant step," adds Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the women that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The record emerged from a period of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that odd in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The themes track departures and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them working out in real time who they want to be.

"I love summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to make an effort in blocking the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Music

That developed toughness called for a new sound – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the percussion.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Laughter

The band's openness inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their personal tales.

Someone ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Path

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their standing in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide fan base.

But the sister act will forever be their top focus.

"We have been making music since I was little," concludes Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still making music."
